How to Fit a Dash Cam: Step-by-Step Installation Guide | Nexar

How To Fit A Dash Cam
As a driver who takes their security seriously, it’s no wonder you decided to purchase a Nexar dash cam. Whether you live in a booming metropolitan area or a small town, things like collisions and hit-and-runs can happen, and you have to protect yourself not only when you’re on the road, but when your car is parked as well.
Those wondering how to fit a dash cam to their car, truck, or SUV can continue reading this blog for the best dash cam installation practices, tips, and perhaps a few hacks that will ensure you get the most out of your dash cam setup.
Check Hardware/Components
Make sure you have all the parts necessary to complete the installation before beginning the process. Here’s what you need to properly fit a dash cam (all provided in your Nexar box):
- Dash cam (hardware)
- OBD pass-through kit
- Installation tool
- Installation clips
- Cleaning wipes
- Electrostatic sticker
More on OBD Pass Through Kit
Whether you’re familiar with it or not, an OBD pass-through kit allows you to plug multiple devices into your car’s OBD-II port at the same time. This kit essentially acts as a “splitter” that allows you to run multiple devices without blocking port access. The OBD pass-through kit allows you to have a dashcam power source while still being capable of using, say, a diagnostic scanner with the OBD port.
Test the Camera Before Fitting to Your Windshield
We know you’re excited to install the camera and hit the road, but it’s best to test the goods first. Make sure the camera is operating correctly and capturing a great image. Make sure the device is working properly by plugging it in, starting your vehicle, and turning the dash cam on. Your Nexar camera LED light indicators will tell you the camera’s operational status.
Next, pair download the Nexar Connect or Nexar Classic app (whichever is applicable to your camera) to your smartphone and pair your phone with your dash cam via the app by following our simple installation/pairing instructions.
Mounting/Fitting Your Dash Cam
Mounting your dashboard camera is an important part of the process and is worth taking special care to ensure the camera is securely placed in the optimal position.
Clean your windshield before mounting the camera. You can use the small envelopes that Nexar provides in the box for your convenience. Any household glass cleaner will do the trick as far as cleaning solution goes. You can, of course, use any specialty products if you wish.
Once your windshield is clean and free of dust or debris, attach the electrostatic sticker (included in your Nexar package) to the glass, then peel off the protective film from the camera lens. If you’ve purchased a connected camera, open the Nexar Connect app to check the live view and make sure everything is working properly. Next, position your dash cam to get a clear, full view of the road—most drivers place it just below the rearview mirror. Finally, peel off the plastic from the back of the dash cam and attach it to the windshield sticker you installed earlier.
Hide the Cables
For a streamlined look, utilize the installation tool and cable clips that come in the Nexar box. These will help you hide and secure the cable. Start from the camera and work your way to the OBD port, wrapping the cable around your car windshield.
How to fit a Dash Cam (Rear)
Installing a rear camera is typically similar. Both front and rear dash cam installation typically take around 10 minutes each – Nexar connected cameras and the rear camera work seamlessly to provide full coverage. The best place to fit a rear camera on your car is near the top center of the rear windshield. This will ensure a clear view of the road behind your car while avoiding obstruction of the rearview mirror as well as the rear defroster grid lines. This is typically the most common placement for best coverage.
Clean the designated area of the rear windshield and open the trunk. Set up the rear camera by connecting the suction cup – connect the cable from the mount to the rear camera. Take off the plastic sticker from the suction cup. Place the adhesive sticker in your desired location for a firm hold. Mount the rear camera and rotate to add pressure.
Connect the rear camera to the power source. Tighten the screw located on the mount – tight but not overly tight. Adjust your camera angle as you prefer – for optimum coverage. Remove the plastic cover from the lens. You can hide your wires using the installation tool and installation clips – both provided in the Nexar box.
Connect the cable to the CLA port. The CLA port is located at the front or back of your car. Keep an eye out for your rear camera in the Nexar Connect app via your main connected camera. All done!

Dash cam front and rear installation does not typically require professional intervention. However, it does depend on the front and rear dash cam system you choose.
